Zoom 6.11 Artist Talks
July 10th  4 - 530p
The four artists will speak about the current work on exhibit and reflect on their contemporary art practice. Will Justice’s Identitas, the Identity Store and Exchange is a participatory installation that plays off of the fact that it is an artwork presented in a mall. It playfully deconstructs the ways in which we define ourselves through things that are purchased in a retail environment. James Mulvaney’s Comfort Curtain is a sculptural installation of a large steel curtain that appears to be hanging on the wall. While the industrial material of the curtain may set an expectation with regard to a specific gender identification, the construction and shape of the object complicates standardized notions of masculinity. Rebecca Steele’s Extra Special Context is a historical research and curatorial experiment. The installation discusses the long-term historical use of the land that we now know as Pioneer Place Mall. Ním Wunnan’s Blind consists of large-scale ink and graphite paintings on mylar and smaller format paintings on backing paper that explore journalistic images of extraordinary events, objects, and experiences. Blind is funded in part by the Regional Arts and Culture Council. This will also be the last day of the show.
