Here’s a bit of info about Emily from her Bio:
Emily Nachison was born and raised in San Diego, California. She attended Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan where she earned an MFA in 2010. She received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2006 she was a finalist for a Travel Grant from the Jaques and Natasha Gelman Foundation. Recently, Nachison was a semi-finalist in the Emerging Artist Residency Program at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts in Richmond, Virginia. Her work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions. She currently lives, works, and teaches in Portland, Oregon.
And here is a bit about her work:
Emily creates naturalistic environments out of man-made materials to explore mythology, landscape and the human perception of nature. Her artwork relies heavily on materiality borrowing elements from anthropology, geology and the decorative arts.
The sculptural forms reference natural formations: mounds, bramble bushes, parasitic plants, minerals and simple man-made structures such as dams, cairns and netting. Emily utilizes materials such as rope, camouflage and Styrofoam to mimic natural forms. The monochromatic palette and surface treatments classify and group objects, suggesting a shared narrative about environment, origin and history. This juxtaposition of natural versus artificial is an investigation into the cultural creation of landscape.
