workshop: Saturday March 3rd 2 - 4pm @ Place
In this workshop, Julie Perini will discuss the process behind the making of Collaboration with the Earth, her 16mm film from 2011 that provided source material for the new installation, Big Film, on view at Place Gallery through April 14, 2012. Celluloid film reacts and transforms when it comes into contact with different substances such as water and soil, creating unpredictable but often dazzling results. The soil conditions, weather, amount of time the film is left to decay, type of sunlight, and other factors all create varying effects on the film. She will show examples of her own work and the work of other filmmakers who have purposely decomposed and destroyed existing film in order to create new works of art. Participants will be able to handle and examine samples of Perini’s decayed 16mm film.
